In two separate industrial accidents in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday, three workers were killed and five injured.

In a blast in a boiler of the expansion unit of Heritage Foods India Ltd at Bayyavaram in Kasimkota mandal of the district, three contract workers were killed.

The dead were identified as Sudhakar (27), Manoj (28), both hailing from Hyderabad, and Dharmaveer (45), from Bihar. The cause of the accident was not known.

Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories D. Chandrasekhar Varma said the department had begun a probe into the cause of the accident at the milk processing plant.

According to a press release issued by Heritage Dairy, the accident occurred in the newly-installed refrigeration section 2 (under trial commissioning).

Electro-mechanical failure

It caught fire due to electro-mechanical failure, resulting in loss of three lives, contract workers hired by Thermal Engineers and Contractors.

“The workers were engaged in insulation work when the unfortunate accident happened.

"It is the first accident in 21 years and the management deeply regrets the incident and conveys condolences to the bereaved families.

Besides, Heritage Foods does not distinguish between regular employees and contract workers.

Compensation

The family of each dead worker will get Rs 10 lakh in compensation and a regular job will be provided in the company for a member of the family.

Support will also be extended to the children for their education,” the note adds.

The cause of the accident is being investigated into.

Steel plant accident

In another accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant here, five employees were injured when a blast occurred while slag came in contact with water in blast furnace-3.

“There was a minor blast when power supply failed,” an official said.

VSP recognised union president D. Adinarayana and INTUC leader Mantri Rajasekhar said four of the injured workers were undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Their condition was stated to be stable.
