The Opposition YSR Congress Party has alleged that the Andhra Pradesh Government is trying to privatise the Thummapala Cooperative Sugar Factory in Visakhapatnam district.

YSR Congress Party President YS Jaganmohan Reddy has said the Government has cleared only half of the ₹6 crore dues to the factory. “The employees have not been getting their salaries for the last seven months. Moves are on to privatise the factory,” he said.

Addressing sugar farmers under the factory catchment area at Thummapala in Visakhapatnam district, he said the Telugu Desam was known to pushing sugar factories into losses before privatising them.

He was visiting the areas destroyed by the Hudhud cyclone on Saturday.

“There was a plan to privatise this factory. But the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy did not allow it. Chandrababu Naidu has a history of weakening sugar factories in the cooperative sector and selling the land and defunct units to private parties. We will not allow this to happen,” he said.

He criticised the Government for not sending officials to assess the extent of damage in the area where the cane was submerged in flood water. “No enumeration work was taken up and no help has come in from the Government,” he said.
