Karnataka police is providing advanced training to its dog squad in BSF’s training academy in Gwalior. This training will help the department in efficient tackling of drug menace and in detecting explosives.

Speaking on the sidelines of a workshop on ‘Technology to combat drug menace’, organised by the School of Social Work here on Thursday, A.M. Prasad, Additional Director General of Police (Crime and Technical Services), said that Karnataka police had in January sent five dogs (one from each range) for training to BSF academy in Gwalior.

Five more dogs will be sent for a six-month training in the next phase. With this, each police range in the State would have two dogs trained in the BSF academy. He said that dog training is not a short-term programme.

Stating that the State police had not taken such an initiative in the last 25 years, Prasad said most of the dogs are locally trained. This is a process of building the capacity of police.
