The BJP is placing its bets again on Narendra Modi for the upcoming elections to the Maharashtra and Haryana Assemblies. The Prime Minister will lead the party’s campaign and will be available for election meetings for nine days in both the States from Saturday. The campaign, named Chalo Chalein Modi ke Saath (Let’s walk along with Modi), will be attended by other senior BJP leaders.

BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said all prominent senior leaders of the party will take part in the campaign. “Our target is to get rid of Congress misrule in both the States and establish the golden era of BJP’s good governance. Our main agenda is good governance and development,” he said.

Naqvi said in the past 15 years, Maharashtra has been lagging in development, the financial capital of Mumbai has been facing an economic crisis, farmers are suffering, youths are helpless and unemployed, and industry is completely jeopardised due to Congress-NCP rule.

Recently, the BJP faced defeat in many sitting seats in the by-polls held in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The party leadership was criticised for raking up controversial issues, such as ‘love jihad’, rather than development. Naqvi said the focus of the new campaign will be the ‘misrule’ of the Congress in both the States.

Apart from Modi, LK Advani, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Murli Manohar Joshi, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states will participate in the campaign.

The BJP is contesting all 90 seats in Haryana and 257 seats out of the 288 seats in Maharashtra. Naqvi said Modi will address the election rallies in both the States from October 4 to 13. party president Amit Shah will campaign for five days each in Haryana and Maharashtra. Advani and Joshi will also address public rallies in the two States.

Confident of win

Modi’s first programme will be an election rally in Karnal in Haryana.

On the same day, he will address three rallies in Kolhapur, Beed and Mumbai.

Naqvi said the BJP is confident of forming a government in both the States, adding that people of these States are in favour of the party, as it has promised to provide them a stable and good government dedicated to development.

Apart from public rallies, BJP workers will hold door-to-door and other traditional modes of campaign. “Our workers at the booth level will also ensure a higher voter turnout,” he added.
