BSES Yamuna Power Ltd, one of Delhi’s two private sector electricity distribution utility, said on Thursday that it is exploring various avenues to make a payment of Rs 161 crore to power generating and transmission companies by July 15.

“As per the Supreme Court order of July 3, 2014, BYPL has to make a payment of ₹ 161 crore by July 15,” said a spokesperson of Reliance Infrastructure’s BSES in a statement.

The company added that current electricity tariffs in Delhi do not cover its costs and old recoverable amounts have accumulated to ₹ 21,000 crore for BSES’ two companies BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd and BSES Yamuna.

“To meet the Supreme Court directive of March 26, 2014 and May 6, 2014, BSES companies have borrowed ₹ 1,000 crore to clear the current shortfall,” the BSES statement said adding that BSES Rajdhani has agreed to pay all dues as on June 30.

The Supreme Court’s order on Thursday covered outstanding dues that BSES companies had owed to power generation and transmission companies between January to June.

As per the BSES website, BSES Yamuna distributes power to an area spread over 200 sq kms to 13.98 lakh customers while BSES Rajdhani distributes power to an area spread over 750 sq km to 19.99 lakh customers.
