BSNL Kerala has topped all peer telecom circles in the country by returning a net profit of ₹412 crore during 2013-14, higher by ₹126 crore than the previous year.

Revenues for the year came in at ₹2,820 crore, according to MSS Rao, Chief General Manager, BSNL Kerala Circle.

The compelling nature of the performance would become clear only when compared with the next best achievement, which is the profit of ₹34 crore notched up by the Odisha circle.

Rao attributed the performance to initiation of a multi-pronged strategy aimed at optimising resources, containing expenses and raising the comfort level of customers.

This has also helped the circle to also emerge as the largest net gainer (more than six lakh) from mobile number portability across the spectrum of service providers and circles in the country.

The circle was able to raise the bar of performance thanks mainly to in-house initiatives by leveraging information technology.

Plan selector

Among these is the best plan selector, a tool that helps the customer service centre personnel suggest the most suitable plan for a particular customer requirement.

Best suited plans are thus generated for broadband and 3G. The tool also suggests both fixed and wireless solutions.

Yet another is the digital cable record management system for digitizing cable records of the circle. Under this, the circle has created a record of all buried cable to track down cable faults in almost real-time.

A third is GSMART, dashboard facility available at the Chief General Manager’s office to track down faults, assessing salvage operation and fixing accountability to the lineman/executive on the field.

RJio enquiries

RM Subbiah, Senior General Manager (Mobility), said Reliance Jio has approached BSNL Kerala with a request to share its tower infrastructure to roll out 4G services.

RJio request pertains to a demand for 559 towers in the circle, of which 32 have been decided on, Subbiah said.

The Kerala Circle is also fast-forwarding work related to the rollout of the national optical fibre network and the fibre-to-the-home service that uses ultra high-speed broadband of up to 100 mbps.

Next-generation switches are being deployed in a phased manner in the circle. Four are being installed at Ernakulam; six at Kozhikode; eight at Thrissur; and three at Thiruvananthapuram.
