Tamil Nadu region of Bank of Baroda has mooted a farmers’ camp to strengthen agriculture advances. The camp, kicked-started on July 1, is expected to come to a close on August 31.
Stating that the response to the initiative was positive so far, the bank’s Regional Manager (TN Region) V Murugan told BusinessLine that they have been able to add 1,000 new farmers accounts till date.
The bank’s drive to strengthen its agri advance portfolio seems like the revival of its Gram Vikas Kendra initiative.
It was in vogue in the 80s‘. A look into the history shows that prominent banker and former Chairman cum Managing Director of Bank of India, M Balachandran, was the first chief of BoB’s Gram Vikas Kendra at Pollachi. Those in the know of developments say that the bank could not sustain as recruitments had practically come to a halt.
“Now, with recruitments happening in a big way in banks, it looks as if the Gram Vikas Kendra model is being revived,” said an officer, preferring anonymity.
