The CBI is likely to exhume the bodies of the Badaun rape victims on July 20 for a fresh autopsy. The two teenaged girls were allegedly raped and murdered on May 27, at their village in Uttar Pradesh.

The medical board has recommended that their bodies — buried on the banks of the Ganga — be exhumed for further investigation, a CBI source said.

Although the victims were Hindus, the custom in these regions is to bury rather than burn the bodies of children and teenaged unmarried girls.

However, the rains may make it difficult to exhume the bodies. With heavy rains in Uttarakhand, the water level is rising and it is feared the graves will be submerged in the next day or two.

The District Magistrate has, however, directed that the graves be protected.

There is a worry that if the bodies are not exhumed within two days, it will become very difficult thereafter due to the rising water level in the Ganga.
