Minister of State for Science and Technology Y Sujana Chowdhary on Monday said the Centre will support bio-tech start-up units likely to be set up in the Godavari districts and elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh.

He was at the inaugural of the three-day conference at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Kakinada, jointly organised by Godavari Knowledge Park, on agricultural, marine and pharma applications in the bio-technology sector.

Incubator

M Gopalakrishna, chairman of the Godavari Knowledge Society, explaining the objectives of the year-old incubation centre said, “Fifty students have come up with innovative ideas and we have chosen 18 of them. We are trying to patent them and take the ideas to the stage of commercialisation. We are mentoring them and the Centre has also assured us of full support.”

MS Shankara Prasad, the convener of Bio-Andhra 2014, said, “We are focusing on marine, agri and pharma applications. We want to have a cluster of bio-tech units in the Godavari districts. We have also made a proposal to set up a marine bio-tech research centre here at a cost of ₹30 crores,” he said.

Chowdhary said regional requirements should be kept in mind while making proposals for start-up. He said, “For instance, we have funded a project based on a fishing tracker which tells the fishermen where to fish in the ocean. There are many such bio-tech applications in the fisheries sector and the incubation centre should focus on them, with emphasis on exports and value addition.”
