Chennai Telephones will withdraw its wireless broadband (WiMAX) services from June 30, 2014. Subscribers in the peripheral areas of Chennai and in Kelambakkam and Medvakkam to the south of the city will lose the service. According to an official press release from Chennai Telephones, this follows the decision by BSNL to surrender BWA Spectrum.
A Chennai Telephones official said it had started the service a couple of years back in areas that do not have conventional cables. Chennai Telephones introduced WiMAX services in suburbs such as Gummidipoondi, Thiruvallur, Ponneri and Maraimalai Nagar.
The decision to surrender the BWA Spectrum is a policy decision due to the high costs involved.
This will impact services in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra, the official said.
