The Andhra Pradesh Government will set up fast track courts to try rape cases in the State, including a recent one, under the Nirbhaya Act.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, while reviewing the progress of a case involving the rape of a software professional in a cab on the outskirts of the city recently, directed various departments including the police to ensure the safety of women employees, especially those in the IT sector.

Safety measured would be stepped up in all the IT corridors, outer ring road and surroundings of Cyberabad and Gachibowli, particularly for women employees on night shifts, he said.

Surveillance System

Faced with the realty of an inadequate and virtually non-functional surveillance system in Cyberabad, Reddy said he would write again to the Prime Minister requesting for a comprehensive surveillance system for Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister stated that the safety measures for short-term and long-term, including installation-maintenance-continuous monitoring of the closed circuit camera system, visible policing, increasing check-posts in IT corridors, policing on ORR, barricading, and vehicle checking will be taken up.

Further, controlling and monitoring of private transport (cabs and autos), colour specific branding of taxis, registration of all autos and taxis with the police, establishment of pre-paid taxi, auto centres in the vicinity of IT Corridors, increasing public transport, MMTS-RTC bus connectivity, electronic toll-gate management etc would be implemented.

The Chief Minister has directed the Chief Secretary to constitute a Committee to suggest immediate measures to be taken up for the safety of women. Reddy has also asked officials to speed up work relating to the implementation of the Public Safety Act, which was passed recently by the State Legislature.
