The Mangalore-based ‘Organic Farmer Consumer Forum’ is planning organise markets for organic products in different parts of the city at least one Sunday every month. The forum is a group of like-minded organic farmers and consumers.

Addressing presspersons in Mangalore on Tuesday, Addoor Krishna Rao, president of the forum, said the main intention of such markets is to reduce the role of middleman in marketing organic produces. The forum provides a platform for the grower and the consumer to come together to buy and sell their produces.

Stating that the forum has been organising such markets at a designated place in the city for the past few months, he said it organised 14 such markets on every alternate Sunday till now.

On the demand for organic food products, he said all the products were sold within two hours of their arrival in the last 14 markets. Though the scheduled time for their market was from 9 am to 2 pm, the products got over by 11 am.

To bring the organic products to the reach of more consumers, the forum has planned to organise such markets in other parts of the city also. Many citizens of Mangalore have come forward to organise such markets in their premises, he said.

To a query on the selection of farmers for this event, Rao said the team of the forum visits the farm of each farmer before allowing the person to participate in the market.

The farm visit helps in ascertaining the claims of the farmers about the quality of their produces, he said.
