India is yet to announce ‘aggressive incentives’ for encouraging automobiles running on alternative fuels — particularly electricity — contrary to global trends, said Kenichiro Yomura, President and Managing Director, Nissan Motor India Pvt Ltd.
Environmental concerns are driving the demand for electric vehicles globally. “The future cannot be ignored,” he said, addressing Automotive R&D Trends, a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Nissan India will be the hub of frugal engineering. A product of this approach — designed, developed and produced locally — is the Datsun Go that will hit the roads by mid-March. Nagesh Basavanhalli, President and Managing Director, Fiat Chrysler India, said electronics account for over 60 per cent of the innovations in automobiles.
V Sumantran, Conference Chairman and Vice-Chairman, Ashok Leyland Ltd, said increasing urbanisation and the need to tackle environmental concerns is driving demand for electric vehicles.
