Kerala Government has drawn up a multi-pronged strategy to make the State the startup capital of the country, Minister of Industries and IT PK Kunhalikutty has said.

Inaugurating the NextGen Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Thrissur on Thursday, he said the government has been undertaking many progressive initiatives during the last three years to inculcate the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in young minds.

Startup ecosystem The launch of the first startup village in March 2012 was a catalyst to create a product startup ecosystem in the State.

“Today, there are about 1,400 product startups in the village, the highest for any incubator in the country. The momentum is clearly shifting to Kerala as the startup capital of the country,” he said.

Steps are afoot to expand and evolve the startup village into a multi-nodal innovation, incubation and business ecosystem centre. The government has also proposed to set up 10 more incubators dedicated to sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries, electronics, medical electronics etc soon, he added.

Image makeover VP Nandakumar, Managing Director and CEO, Manappuram Finance Ltd, said the industrial landscape of Kerala has been going through a sea change with the State shedding the image of militant trade unionism.

According to TR Raghulal, Managing Director of Elite Food Group, the State now has many opportunities. In the fast evolving business ecosystem, many institutions under the State government have sprung up in the finance sector that will go a long way in bolstering industrial growth, he said.

The State is going through a surge in entrepreneurship with the active support of the government, said Navas Meeran, Chairman, CII southern region and Chairman of the Eastern group of companies.

He urged the second generation businessmen and women who have taken over their family businesses to pass on the experience and knowledge to the next generation of entrepreneurs to ensure a faster industrial growth in the State.
