Kolkatans suffered for the second consecutive Monday, with taxi operators going on a wildcat strike.
The operators have gone on strike protesting against alleged police excesses and imposition of a hefty fine of ₹ 3,000 on taxi drivers for refusal to ferry passengers.
Refusal to ferry passengers has been one of the major problems in the city.
As many as 35,000-40,000 yellow taxis have stayed off the roads following a call by the Left-backed trade unions. Even Bengal Taxi Association, which has support from the Trinamool Congress, is said to support the former.
This apart the city has a fleet of 'no refusal' cabs and a handful of blue taxis and radio cabs.
Operators are expected to stage a demonstration at the city centre later in the day. Later, this week, the taxi operators are likely to join the bus operators in a joint transport strike.
