The Union Ministry of Water Resources, through the Krishna River Water Management Board, has directed release of 6,000 cusecs of water per day from Nagarjunasagar dam to the Krishna delta region for drinking water requirement up to July 8.

The meeting was held on Tuesday as decided last week to review and follow up on the release of water from Krishna river to the delta region of Andhra Pradesh.

Drinking needs The Board had last week decided to release 10 thousand million cubic feet of water to the Krishna delta system for drinking water needs in Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari and Prakasham districts at the rate of 6,000 cusecs per day. It also hinted that it would meet periodically and review the situation.

As per data gathered by the Central Water Commission at Wadenappali, the release of water, about 2 km downstream of the Pulichintala project, is below the expected level due to insufficient water.

Therefore, considering the drinking water requirements of the delta area, it was decided to release 6000 cusecs per day up to July 8.

Assess situation In the meantime, it was decided to gather data and assess the situation and also the utilisation patterns.
