Left Front Chairman Biman Bose has sought a probe into the fire in Santsohpur-Maheshtala area on the outskirts of the city.
Nearly 700 shanties were gutted in a fire in the area on Saturday, leaving more than 1,000 people homeless. However, no injuries or casualties were reported.
Hinting at a possible conspiracy in the fire, Bose said, “The incident should be properly probed to unearth the truth and those who are responsible for such a heinous act should be given exemplary punishment.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on Saturday termed it as “a small incident” and promised rehabilitation of the victims.
“Why the Chief Minister, even if the Prime Minister had told me it was a small incident I would not agree. The act of setting something deliberately on fire can never be a small incident,” Bose said .
Meanwhile, Pradip Bhattacharjee, President of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, also demanded a probe into the incident.
“Our leader and MP Deepa Dasmunsi had visited the spot on Sunday and given us a horrific report about the incident. How can the chief minister term it a small incident,” Bhattacharjee said.
PTI adds:
The police filed an FIR against 11 persons, including Trinamool Congress councillor of Mahestala Municipality Dipika Dutta and TMC leader Rafiq Mollah. Of the 11, five were arrested, police sources said.
The chairman of the municipality, Dulal Das, who was in Tripura on some personal work denied allegations that his partymen were involved.
