BJP MPs from the coastal Karnataka districts such as Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have formed a development cell to advise them on the overall development of coastal Karnataka. The preliminary meeting of the cell was conducted in Mangalore on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons after the meeting, Shobha Karandlaje, MP representing Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, said the cell would focus on various development needs of the region.

Stating that the development cell will be expanded with the inclusion of MPs representing Shimoga, Kodagu and Uttara Kannada districts, she said all these regions have similarities in their development needs. Such a cell will help come out with suggestions for the overall development of these districts, she said.

The Dakshina Kannada MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, said that the cell would look into the development needs from short- and long-term perspectives, and give suggestions accordingly, he said.

Ganesh Karnik, BJP MLC and member of the development cell, said the cell includes wings such as education, agriculture, infrastructure development, healthcare, tourism development, industry, urban development, and port and airport development among others. The cell will meet once in two months, he said.
