In her second Cabinet reshuffle this year, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday brought back veteran leader Malay Ghatak and introduced two new faces in the Cabinet. Purnendu Basu, incumbent Labour Minister, will now head the Agriculture Department.

Malay Ghatak, former Agriculture Minister and the party unit’s head in Burdwan district, will be the new Labour Minister. Ghatak had tendered his resignation after the party candidate’s defeat in the Asansol Lok Sabha seat to BJP’s Babul Supriyo in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Arup Roy, Agriculture Marketing Minister, was holding the portfolio after Ghatak’s resignation. The two new faces are Jyotirmoy Kar, MLA from Potashpur in East Midnapore, and Ashis Banerjee from Rampurhat in Birbhum. Kar will be the Minister for Co-operation Department.

Divested of portfolio

Former IPS officer Rachpal Singh, who held the twin responsibilities of Co-operation and Planning, has been divested of the Co-operation portfolio. The last reshuffle that took place in June saw Amit Mitra take up additional responsibility of IT apart from Finance, Commerce and Industry.

Partha Chatterjee took over as the Education Minister, replacing Bratya Basu, who was shifted to the Tourism Ministry during the reshuffle.
