The State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) of Telangana has asked all banks to complete the opening of basic bank accounts under the Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojna (PMJDY) scheme by December 20.

“We have conducted a survey which shows that a very ‘small’ portion of households still remain without bank accounts. We have asked banks to initiate to special measures to bring them under the ambit of banking,’’ J Sitapathi Sarma, General Manager, State Bank of Hyderabad and convenor of state SLBC told BusinessLine here.

A senior functionary of Andhra Pradesh SLBC too confirmed that the job was ‘almost done’ in the 13 districts. While the bankers are yet to formally divulge actual numbers, it is understood that the financial inclusion in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is about 90 per cent and a formal declaration that the states are fully covered under the Jan Dhan Yojna is likely before end of this month.

Customers in some places where the coverage was not complete, were advised by various banks to complete opening of accounts by Monday.

The data on numbers of accounts opened is being collated. However, the entire benefits of the scheme such as insurance cover may not immediately be available to the account-holders as there has been some delay in issue of RuPay cards. The scheme was launched by the Government of India August this year with a target to cover all the households of the country by providing a bank account (accounts opened other than in post offices and co-operative banks).
