Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackrey has been asked to explain why the Election Commission (EC) should not take action against him for violation of the Model Code of Conduct while campaigning in the State for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

The Commission has given till 11 am on Wednesday for Raj to explain his stand, failing which it will take action without further reference to the leader, the EC said in a statement.

The MNS leader is charged with making statements on October 5 at Ghatkopar and on October 7 at Kalna which violated the Model Code.

On October 5, Raj had allegedly said: “From the day you give this State in my hands, from that day the employment in any industry created in Maharashtra will be given only to Marathi boys and girls in Maharashtra.

“No employment will be given to the boys and girls from other States.

“Their entry will also be stopped. Their enquiry will be started from the train itself. Maharashtra has not taken contract to fend for people from other States. Only our boys and girls should get jobs here.”
