The Union Power Secretary, Mr P. Uma Shankar, today directed southern States to accelerate the implementation of power reforms programme.
He wanted early implementation of the Restructured-Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) to enable the distribution companies to reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses.
Chairing the Southern regional meeting here today, Mr Uma Shankar said southern States have achieved a considerable progress in the last one year but felt the need to expedite the reforms programme. The programme seeks to reduce losses and enable distribution companies to offer better consumer services.
The conference was organised by the Power Finance Corporation and attended by representatives from Southern regional power utilities.
The Central official wanted Southern States to meet the revised targets for timely completion of the project by March 2013.
He assured to take up the matter with the Planning Commission and Finance Ministry for revising targets for implementation of the reforms programme.
Mr Dinesh Kumar, State Principal Secretary, Energy, highlighted some of the issues confronting the State. These include additional supply of natural gas, coal linkage for new projects and allotment of unallocated Central power up to 500 MW to Andhra Pradesh.
“If the State manages to get additional 4 million metric standard cubic meters of natural gas per day, gas plants can operate at 75 per cent load. Three other new gas plants with a capacity of 2,000 MW were unable to generate power due to non-allocation of gas,” Mr Kumar said.
