The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to prohibit establishment of private law colleges in the State as they are not able to provide affordable legal education to the poor.
The Law Minister, S P Velumani, moved a Bill, the Tamil Nadu Establishment of Private Law Colleges (Prohibition) Act, 2014, in the Assembly today. The proposed law comes into force with immediate effect once enacted.
The Bill states that the Tamil Nadu Government has taken a policy decision to establish in stages the required number of government-run law colleges in the State. These will provide legal education at an affordable cost.
Private trusts and societies have not been able to provide legal education or continue to run law colleges at an affordable cost to the economically and socially weaker sections, it said.
The Bill states that neither the Government nor the Dr Ambedkar Law University will grant permission or any certificate to private individuals and entities to impart legal education for a law degree, diploma or other academic distinctions.
