There was nothing much to cheer about for Tamil Nadu in the Railway Budget.
Two premium trains and two regular express trains were the only major announcements for the State in the Budget presented by Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda.
The Minister announced Shalimar-Chennai Express and Jaipur-Madurai premium trains. He also announced Ahmedabad-Chennai and Vishakapatnam-Chennai express trains.
The Railways would continue to operate special trains for festival season to Melmaruvathur and Velankanni for pilgrims. The pilgrim special will connect Rameswaram with Haridwar via Chennai, Bangalore, Ayodhya and Varanasi.
The extension of the Tindivanam and Nagari railway line with a new line up to Puducherry and a survey for doubling of Salem to Omalur railway line were main highlights in the interim Railway Budget for 2014-15 presented by the previous government. However, there was no mention of these in the Budget.
Efforts will be made to increase the speed of trains to 160-200 kmph in select sectors to significantly reduce travel time between major cities.
The Minister announced that Chennai-Hyderabad and Mysore-Bangalore-Chennai sectors have been identified in Tamil Nadu for this.
