VIT University, a private university, will open its campus in Bangalore – the third after Vellore (its headquarters) and Chennai.

The 100-acre campus will be ready in one year, according to its founder and chancellor G Viswanathan. Details of investment and the number of seats the new campus will have are being worked out, he told newspersons.

While the Vellore campus can accommodate around 3,000 students, the Chennai facility can take on 1,000, he said.

Viswanathan said this year a record 1.93 lakh candidates have registered for VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) to be held in the form of a computer-based test from April 9 to 20. The test is for admission to the B.Tech programme offered by the university for 4,197 seats, he said.

Last year, 1.66 lakh candidates registered for VITEEE.

The counselling for admission will be held from May 19 to 22. Central and state board toppers will get 100 per cent fee waiver for all four years. VITEEE rank holders between 1 and 50 will get 75 per cent fee waiver, those from 51 to 100 will get 50 per cent and between 101 and 1,000 get 25 per cent, he said.

Plus two toppers among students (one boy and one girl) from government schools in rural areas in each district in Tamil Nadu appearing for VITEEE and securing top marks will get 100 per cent tuition fee waiver and full exemption from hostel and mess fee.

Andhra Pradesh tops the chart with 37,298 registrations, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Tamil Nadu behind other states due to not many coaching centres available, he said. On placement, Viswanathan said 214 companies have visited the campus so far and recruited 3,031 students. The maximum salary offered this year was ₹16 lakh (cost to company) as against ₹14 lakh last year. Software companies that recruit in large numbers offered around ₹3 lakh, he said.
