The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh police, asking it the details of the action taken against Union Minister VK Singh’s comments over the murder of Dalits in Haryana.

The former Army General had said that the incident was fortunate, adding that Centre cannot be held responsible if someone stones a dog.

NCSC Chairman and Congress leader PL Punia said that in the wake of the Minister’s remarks, notices have been issued seeking details of action report from Uttar Pradesh police. The BJP alleged that the NCSC is playing politics and behaving like a Congress spokesperson.

Punia said the notice cannot be issued to VK Singh, but will be issued to the law enforcing agencies for alleged dereliction of duty.

“We have sought to know from the police whether action under IPC and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act can be taken in the case and what action has been taken so far?” Punia said.

The notice has asked the DGP of the State and SSP of Ghaziabad, from where VK Singh has made the statement, to appear in person before it on November 2.

“It is insulting not only for that particular Dalit family but the entire Dalit society,” Punia said, adding that Ram Vilas Paswan, who is part of the NDA government, has condemned it.

Constitutional post

The BJP said Punia is acting like a Congress spokesperson.

“Punia must explain whether he wants to act like a Congress spokesperson or somebody in a constitutional post. Can he act as a party leader while holding the NCSC chief post? We have strong objections to his comments,” said the BJP’s Dalit face, Vijay Sonkar Shastri, told reporters here on Friday.
