With Gujarat gearing up for Assembly polls later this year, and issues such as quota agitations threatening to upset the ruling party’s applecart for the first time since 1995, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and the BJP are testing the prevailing popular mood through opinion polls.

But “Polls are subject to error and are for entertainment only,” said the bottom line of the “poll results” of a poll conducted in the last three days on behalf of Rupani on his Facebook page.

On his FB page, Rupani said: “Who would you vote for in the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha elections 2017-18? An online poll is in progress. You are requested to decide who you would offer your valuable vote to.” A link was provided for the voting.

The “selection result” showed on Monday that the BJP “won” overwhelmingly, with 71 per cent votes, or 163 respondents out of 229. The Congress (17 per cent) and AAP (1 per cent) polled 38 and three votes, respectively, whereas ‘Others’ polled five votes or 2 per cent.

Interestingly, 20 respondents, or 9 per cent, opted for NOTA.

Another survey, conducted by private data processing firm War Room Strategies, polled nearly 1,500 voters in 15 Vidhan Sabha constituencies about demonetisation. Apparently conducted for the BJP, the poll’s result claimed that 69 per cent of respondents favoured the move, and 72 per cent wanted Narendra Modi to become the Prime Minister again.
