The Capital Region Development Authority and the Krishna District administration have been empowered with the task of pooling land for the expansion of the Gannavaram airport near Vijayawada.

The airport located about 18 km from Vijayawada is proposed to be upgraded to an international airport.

The State Ministry of Municipal Administration and Urban Development has made CRDA a coordinating agency for land pooling as it had been entrusted with similar task for land pooling for the construction of a new capital city of Amaravati.

The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act was enacted in 2014 December for the purpose of planning, execution, financing and promoting the capital region and capital area for Andhra Pradesh.

The Government is keen on expansion of the Gannavaram airport as it would serve the new capital city coming up in the region. According to the Government most of the farmers have agreed to give their lands under the land pooling system as was done in the capital city.

It is proposed to add 687 acres under the land pooling system for the airport expansion, which will enable Airports Authority of India to expand runway, create a bigger terminal and also encourage maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities. Currently three airliners operate providing 11 inbound and 11 outbound flights.

Since the area comes under the APCRDA limits, it has designated the district collector of Krishna district and the CRDA Commissioner to carry out voluntary land pooling scheme.

Those who surrender the land would be provided developed land.

Giridhar Aramane, Principal Secretary to AP Government in his orders had directed the Commissioner of CRDA to earmark developed plots necessary for allotment to the land owners in the Amaravati city limits.

The Ministry through an order had notified the erstwhile Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTMUDA) area as Andhra Pradesh capital region. Thereafter, APCRDA under the chairmanship of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, with other members, has been constituted.

The State Government, which is at advanced stage of concluding the land pooling process for the capital city, expects to complete the process by mid July 15. Of the 33,000 acres proposed to be pooled in, the State has managed to secure consent for over 27,000 acres of land and the remaining is also expected to be completed, according to Government sources.
