The Andhra Pradesh government is setting an example to other States by taking the OFC network to the villages aggressively and providing the high-speed broadband services to usher in digital India, according to JS Deepak, Secretary in the Union Ministry of Telecom.

He was speaking to the media here on Wednesday after visiting some of the project sites along with Sanjay Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Bharat Broadband Network Ltd (BBNL).

Deepak said the State government was making use of the power lines over ground to lay the optical fibre network in contrast to BBNL, which was laying the cables underground. “It is a low-cost and quicker way of laying the OFC network to offer broadband services to the villages and we are exploring the possibility of following the AP model in some parts of the country. Ultimately, it will be a mix of underground cables, over ground network and also wireless network to take broadband connectivity to the villages,” he said.

He said the Bharat Net project was being implemented in three phases and “it is the objective to provide link all villages in the country with OFC network by June 2018 by the end of the second phase. By the end of the third, the entire country would have a state-of-the-art OFC network.”

He said the high-speed broadband connectivity would revolutionise the villages by providing e-education, e-governance and tele-medicine. It would truly empower the citizens, he added.
