Parents expect colleges to equip children with knowledge and skills required for gainful employment. Often, they are disappointed as most graduates are found unemployable by the industry, according to K Lakshminarayana, Director of AP State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC).

Speaking in the backdrop of a two-day job fair, being held at the Andhra University College of Engineering here on Saturday, he said, “the most common criticism is that college graduates today lack an attitude to learning or working.”

Knowledge transfer

To improve the situation, the APSSDC is taking up capacity building of teachers. One such programme was conducted by an American trainer who imparted skills to the polytechnic college teachers on teaching English. The trainer would be returning for another programme in July.

The State Government would soon be entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Siemens Corporation for the establishment of six Centres of Excellence in different parts of the State. Each of these Centres would have five skill development centres. The centres would offer training in different disciplines and any student attending a course in these centres would be able to ‘hit the road running’ and work in any industry, he explained. The Siemens Centres would be in place in nine to 10 months, he added.

Tight ship

He said that about 14,500 students had registered for the job fair whereas the companies were planning to recruit only about 1,000. Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, GSN Raju was the chief guest at the inaugural function.

CEO of Millennium Software, Sridhar Reddy was also present at the event. City-based Millennium Software in association with Andhra University organised the job fair at the AU College of Engineering on Saturday and Sunday.
