Bandh was observed in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday in response to the call given by the CPI seeking special status to the State and in protest against the NDA Government's refusal to accord such status to the State. The bandh call, supported by the Congress and the YSR Congress Party, elicited a partial response.

RTC buses were affected here and other cities such as Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Kakinada. Agitating Congress, CPI and CPM workers and leaders were taken into custody at several places.

State Congress president N. Raghuveera Reddy, who participated in a rally at Vijayawada, said the BJP leaders like M. Venkaiah Naidu had made a big show in the Rajya Sabha and made tall promises at the time of bifurcation of the State, but now that they were in power they were conveniently forgetting the promises. The TDP was unable to exert any pressure on the Union Government and get the promised special status for the State.

The Congress organised a rally at Tirupati for special status and a man, Munikoti, immolated himself at the venue a few days ago. His self-immolation roused passions and the Congress was blamed for politicising the issue.
