President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday appointed five new governors in Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, and a Lieutenant Governor for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Banwarilal Purohit was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu, which did not have a full-time Governor.

The State has been seeing political turmoil after the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa​ and the Opposition had been demandinf a full-time Governor. Purohit will take charge from C Vidyasagar Rao, who held additional responsibility along with Maharashtra.

Satya Pal Malik, former MP and BJP’s national vice president, has been appointed Bihar governor. The post had fallen vacant after Kovind was nominated as BJP’s presidential candidate.

According to a press communiqué from Rashtrapati Bhawan, Jagdish Mukhi would be the new governor of Assam, replacing Purohit.

Former member of the Bihar Legislative Council, Ganga Prasad, has been appointed as Governor of Meghalaya. Purohit was holding the additional charge of Meghalaya.

Admiral (Retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi will be the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in place of Mukhi, the release said.

Brigadier (Retd) B D Mishra would be the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, said the release, adding that he would take charge from Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, who was holding additional charge of Arunachal Pradesh.
