West Bengal Governor KN Tripathi is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. While the meeting was pre-scheduled, sources speculate that issues of post-poll violences in the State are likely to come up for discussion.
Incidentally, the meeting comes in the backdrop of post- poll violence in the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas, which saw the death of several people on Saturday evening. While police claim two BJP workers and one of the Trinamool Congress died in political clashes, the BJP leadership here has claimed that four of its workers were killed.
The area where violence broke out on Saturday falls under the Basirhat Lok Sabha Constituency. Trinamool Congress’ Nusrat Jehan had won this seat defeating BJP’s Sayantan Ghosh.
On Sunday, BJP workers were seen having heated arguments with the police in different parts of North 24 Parganas.
State BJP leaders, including party President and MP Dilip Ghosh, MP Locket Chatterjee and National Secretary Rahul Sinha, were stopped at various places in the district.
Police stopped the BJP leaders in Basirhat while they were taking the remains of the deceased workers to a party office.
Governor Tripathi on Sunday issued a statement “expressing concern” over the violence.
“Governor Tripathi is very sad at the unfortunate loss of lives and properties of the citizens. He extends his heartfelt sympathy for the families and near and dear ones of the deceased. He appeals to all concerned to see to it that no violent incidents take place and peace and harmony prevail in the state,” the Raj Bhavan statement said.
Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has issued an advisory and expressed its “deep concern”.
It has “strongly advised” that all necessary measures are taken to maintain law and order, peace and public tranquility.
Strict action against officials found delinquent in discharge of their duty has also been suggested.
“The unabated violence over the past weeks appears to be a failure on the part of the law enforcement machinery of the state to maintain the rule of law and inspire confidence among people,” it said.
