The ruling BJP managed an easy win in the latest civic body polls in Gujarat, winning 44 of the 75 municipalities across 22 districts that went to polls on Saturday.

The BJP secured 47 municipalities — 12 less than its tally in the 2013 polls — whereas the Congress registered victory in 13 municipalities, up from 6 in the previous polls.

BJP welcomed the results and celebrated its victory at the State party headquarters, Shree Kamalam, in Gandhinagar.

The victory appears a remarkable comeback after the December 2017 Assembly elections, when the party faced a tough contest with the Congress, to end up within 100 seats in the 182-member Assembly. BJP had 117 MLAs after the 2012 election to 99 in 2017, while Congress increased its size from 59 in 2012 to 77 in 2017.
