Service minded student volunteers are being roped in to identify potentially talented but economically backward individuals and help improve their standard of living.
This novel proposal mooted by Canara Bank is set to take off across colleges in Coimbatore.
Sharing the idea with Business Line, J Vanangamudi, Head, MSME Facilitation Centre, Canara Bank said that the pilot has been set in motion in association with SNR Sons College.
“We have in the first phase enrolled 50 student volunteers. These students have been assigned the task of selecting an area and identifying talented individuals from economically weaker sections in that locality. Thereafter, they can assist in improving their living standard. The effort is aimed at channelising the energy of the student volunteer and putting it to productive use,” Vanangamudi explained.
Asked how students can assist this proposition, he said “the student would have to identify the individual’s potential/ interest, spot a product, link the individual to the group that is engaged in the making a similar product such as roasted peanut, pickle, pappads etc, and finally help in labelling, packaging and marketing the stuff.”
Vanangamudi is contemplating to engage the services of Saraswathi Easwaran, Secretary, Ramaswami Chinnammal Trust for imparting skill training and also in helping the group prepare the food item in a standards manner.
