The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested a Commissioner of Service Tax of the Haldia Commissionerate from his residence at Kolkata on allegations of demanding and accepting bribe.
According to a CBI spokesperson he was arrested allegedly accepting the last instalment of Rs 5 lakh; out of a total Rs 20 lakh bribe from a private company.
The private company, sources said, was engaged in stevedoring and offshore cargo handling in the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).
At least three other persons who were arrested include the Commissioner’s aide; a director of the private company; and, the courier (who was delivering the alleged bribe money).
“Searches have been conducted at 13 locations in Kolkata, Haldia, Hyderabad and Guntur which led to recovery of further incriminating documents. Scrutiny of the seized documents is in progress,” a CBI spokesperson said.
