The Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI) -- the apex intelligence agency under the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) for combating evasion of Central Excise Duty and Service Tax -- opened a regional unit at Mangalore on Wednesday.
DGCEI focuses on the detection of evasion of Central Excise duty and Service Tax. The Mangalore regional unit would function under the control of the zonal unit in Bangalore. The Mangalore unit will spearhead the anti-evasion activities in the revenue districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chamrajanagar, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore and Shimoga.
D Purushotham, Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore, inaugurated the DGCEI’s Mangalore unit, in the presence of Lakshmi Hande Puri, Commissioner of Income Tax of Mangalore, and M Subramanyam, Commissioner of Central Excise and Service Tax of Mangalore.
