West Bengal Commerce and Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee on Monday said that the Centre’s decision to lift the ban on industrial expansion at Haldia and two other industrial towns would attract investments.

According to him, nearly 30 investment proposals for the expansion of existing industries and setting up of new industries were pending with the State Government, since the ban was imposed since 2010 based on the Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI).

The ban on industrial expansion at Haldia, Asansol and parts of Howrah was lifted last week by the Ministry of Environment and Forests as the pollution level has decreased (CEPI below 70).

“This will encourage industries to invest at the port town of Haldia, at the Durgapur-Asansol industrial belt and Howrah. We had been trying to remove this ban from these industrial towns and this is very good news for the industrial growth of the State,” Chatterjee told reporters here.

He was speaking on the sidelines of 159th Annual General Meeting of Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
