The Civil Contractors’ Association of Dakshina Kannada district has urged the Government to bring down the cement price in the country.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Wednesday, Purushottam Kottary, president of the association, said that the price of cement, which was ₹330 a bag three months ago, is now being sold above ₹400 a bag.
The Civil Contractors’ Association of Dakshina Kannada represents more than 220 small contractors in the district. The increase in the price of cement makes it difficult for them to complete their projects on the pre-agreed price. This has affected the construction activities in residential projects, he said.
Stating that some of the low-cost housing schemes and other civil construction activities of the state government are also taken up by the contractors, he said the government is not making efforts to supply them cement at reduced prices.
The increase in the price affects such government projects also, he said.
To a query if the association will resort to stop construction activities, he said the association is in talks with other stakeholders such as builders’ associations and civil engineers’ association in the district in this regard. A suitable decision will be taken soon after discussing with them, he said.
