Kochi will soon receive piped natural gas (PNG) as Indian Oil Adani Gas Pvt Ltd (IOAGPL) is set to launch its city gas distribution project for household and commercial consumers.

The project envisages supply of natural gas to domestic, commercial, industrial and transportation sectors in Ernakulam district, covering about 3,054 sq km.

The first domestic and commercial PNG connection will be launched in Ernakulam by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at Government Medical College campus at Kalamassery on Saturday.

According to Rajeev Sharma, CEO of Adani Gas Ltd, IOAGPL could commence PNG supply to about 50 households within four months from the date of authorisation. The JV will invest about ₹435 crore in CGD project over a period of five years to provide about 40,700 domestic PNG connections in phases.

The Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) had in October 2015 authorised IOAGPL, a 50:50 JV of IOC and Adani Gas, to implement the city gas distribution project.

To cater to the transportation sector, IOAGPL will set up eight CNG stations. The company will explore the feasibility of supplying CNG to fishing vessels and houseboats, he added.

IOAGPL is also setting up CGD network in six more geographical areas such as Allahabad, Chandigarh, Daman, Dharwad (Karnataka), Panipat (Haryana) and Udhamsingh Nagar (Uttarkhand).
