The Fisheries Coordination Committee, a collective of fishing trade unions and the association of boat owners, have called for a coastal Kerala hartal on April 8 to protest against the recommendations of the Meena Kumari Committee on fishing and the Centre’s recent ‘anti-fishworker’ directives.
The hartal will last from 6 am to 6 pm and will cover fish markets, fish processing centres, fishing harbours and all fishing-related activities, FCC leaders said.
Apart from the rejection of the Meena Kumari recommendations that the FCC says will lead to the plundering of the Indian waters by foreign fishing vessels, the hartal will press for the dumping of the recommendations for extending the ban on trawling during the monsoon.
The requirement that those fishing in deep sea should carry their passports should be done away with, it said. The FCC also wants the move for linking the Pampa and Vaipar rivers scrapped.
