The Congress is learnt to have expedited efforts to move an impeachment motion in the Rajya Sabha against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. A party source told BusinessLine that senior Congress leaders are in touch with other Opposition parties on the matter.

The Left parties had announced a similar plan after four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court held a press conference against certain administrative issues in the apex court.

The Opposition had termed the development “a dark episode in the country’s democracy”. Some senior leaders of the Congress, however, were not interested in moving against the highest legal institution of the country.

The party is believed to have circulated a draft among the Opposition parties. Apart from the Left, the NCP, SP, BSP, RJD and DMK seem to have agreed to the Congress’s plan. To move an impeachment motion, at least 50 MPs should sign on a notice in the prescribed format.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan was in touch with all Opposition parties on the issue. On Tuesday, he met Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and solicited her cooperation.

Soumitra Sen, who was a judge of the Calcutta High Court, was impeached by the Upper House in 2009. He was the last to go through the constitutional procedure in the recent past.
