The CPI(M) has asked the Election Commission to enquire into the reported presence of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at a meeting of the BJP that was reviewing its preparations for the Tripura elections.

The CPI(M)’s Tripura unit Secretary Bijan Dhar wrote to the Commission on Tuesday, accusing Doval of violating all norms by participating in the meeting. The meeting was reportedly convened by the leaders of the BJP-RSS at the residence of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the BJP’s strategy for Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

Quoting a PTI report, Dhar said the BJP’s central leaders including Singh, Ram Madhav and RSS leader Krishna Gopal had met at the minister’s residence to discuss the Tripura elections, and Doval was also present in that meeting.

‘A threat to democracy’

“Presence of any person holding very important position like that of National Security Advisor is not only undesirable and objectionable, it is a glaring instance of blatant misuse of administration by the ruling party at the centre for garnering political mileage in the elections. Thus such misuse of administration is nothing but real threat to the democratic system of the country,” Dhar said in the letter.

He urged the poll panel to oversee that no political party gets any undue electoral opportunity by use of administration. He demanded that the Commission order an investigation by an appropriate authority into the matter and take stern legal measures “in the event it is found fact in the investigation”.
