Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat (DKZP) will initiate comprehensive horticulture development in 10 clusters in the district.
Chief executive officer of DKZP K.N. Vijayaprakash said this while inaugurating a training programme on terrace gardening here on Monday.
He said that each cluster – from 30 hectares to 100 hectares – will focus on a particular crop for comprehensive development. Crops such as jackfruit, pepper and ‘nendra’ variety of banana will get focussed attention under this programme, he said.
An amount of Rs 4.81 crore has been earmarked for the 10 clusters in the district, Vijayaprakash said.
The DKZP has taken steps to educate students on agriculture, and 2,631students have been taken to various farms under the ‘Krishi Darshan’ programme. This will create awareness about agriculture among them, he said.
Steps have also been taken to build compound walls at a cost of Rs 5.8 crore in 113 schools in the district. The aim of this is to encourage the development horticulture farms in schools, he added.
H.S. Upendra Kamath, chairman and managing director of Vijaya Bank, who was present on the occasion, said land is becoming scarce because of rapid urbanisation and there is a need to give importance to terrace gardening in urban areas.
The inaugural function was followed by training sessions on terrace gardening by resource persons.
