The floods in Chennai last December and its aftermath has taken a toll on the AIADMK in Chennai and its neighbouring districts.

The ruling party drew a lot of flak from the opposition political parties and the public for the mismanagement of rescue and rehabilitation work during the floods. The AIADMK coming a cropper during this crisis was an election plank the opposition parties, including the DMK, used with success during their campaign. The voting trend appears to bear out this sentiment.

AIADMK won a little over a third of seats from this part of Tamil Nadu, as against two-thirds in the Assembly elections of 2011.

Of the 37 constituencies in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, AIADMK managed to win only in 15, while the remaining 22 seats were snapped up by DMK. Also, the AIADMK could win only two seats in Kancheepuram district. It bagged Sriperumbudur and Thiruporur, while the remaining 9 seats went to the DMK.

In the 2011 elections, the AIADMK won 27 seats in the three districts, while Vijayakant’s DMDK, which was part of AIADMK alliance, won six. DMK and CPI (M) won two seats each.

Though the Jayalalithaa government unveiled several welfare schemes and compensation in an attempt to counter the campaign of the opposition parties, the floods continued to haunt the AIADMK and it featured in all public meetings of DMK.
