In an attempt to ensure that the maximum number of people of Assam are able to cast their vote in the General Elections due next year, the Election Commission has asked the Chief Election Officer of Assam to coordinate closely with the State Coordinator National Register of Citizens to ensure that all eligible persons are included in the electoral rolls during Summary Revision 2019.

“This way a final electoral roll will be published on January 4 next year, which will be used for the General Elections to be held in 2019,” the Election Commission said in a statement.

The Commission statement comes days after 40 lakh in Assam were excluded from the final draft list to identify genuine Indians national living in the State. At a press conference soon after the list was made public, Registrar General of India Sailesh announced that 2.89 crore people found to be eligible for inclusion in the complete draft of the National Register of Citizens of the total 3.29 crore applicants.

The EC statement points out that this is a draft NRC. “After this, in the next one month all 40 lakh individuals will be informed about the reasons why their names were not included. Thereafter, they can file their claims and objections and after decision on the claims, final list of NRC will be published,” the statement adds.

ECI with its objective of ‘no voter to be left behind’ has asked CEO Assam to coordinate closely with State Coordinator NRC to ensure that all eligible persons are included in Electoral Roll during Summary Revision 2019, the statement adds.
