The Maharashtra government has decided to retrofit 3,000 government buildings across the State with energy efficient appliances, which is expected to save ₹115 crore annually in electricity costs.

On Tuesday, the Public Works Department (PWD) signed an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) to retrofit lights, fans, and ACs in the identified buildings with energy efficient ones. EESL is a joint venture Company of PSUs under the Power Ministry.

Pact signed The agreement was signed by Ajit Sagne, Secretary (Buildings), PWD, and EESL’s Chief General Manager SP Garnaik.

Under the terms of the agreement, EESL will spend ₹307 crore for the retrofit of the buildings. The PWD will pay EESL from the savings in electricity bills over five years.

EESL will install about 26,500 energy efficient air conditioners, 1.1 million LED lights and 2.5 lakh ceiling fans, which will save 120 million units of electricity. The retrofits will be carried under the Buildings Energy Efficient Programme and is expected to be completed by 2019.

Energy savings Garnaik said the programme would bring in large savings, but the government is not be required to make fund allocations for building upgradation. It will also bring down peak-hour demand for energy.

A press statement issued by EESL said similar programmes have been implemented in Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and New Delhi. In total, 4,145 buildings have been identified under the programme and retrofits on 58 buildings have been completed.
