Elections to elect 58 members to the Rajya Sabha from 16 States will be held on March 23. Counting of votes will also take place on the same day, the Election Commission announced on Friday.
The elections are being held to fill the seats for members retiring in April and May this year.
Members whose terms are ending include Union ministers Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan, JP Nadda, Thaawar Chand Gehlot and Ramdas Athawale.
March 12 is the last date for filing of nominations, and March 15, the last date for their withdrawal.
While 10 seats from Uttar Pradesh will be vacated, Maharashtra and Bihar will witness elections for six seats each. West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh will see a contest for five seats each. Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will see a contest for one seat each.
Three members each from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan will retire, triggering elections, while Jharkhand will be able to send two representatives to the Upper House.
Besides, there is also a “casual vacancy” to the Council of States from Kerala due to the resignation of MP Veerendra Kumar, whose regular term was to end in 2022.
