Addressing the 84 plenary session of the Congress here on Saturday UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said ensuring victory for the party remains a major challenge and asked Congress workers to be ready to make sacrifices to bring the party back to its glory. “Congress’s victory is nation’s victory. Congress’s victory is victory for every one of us,” she told the delegates apparently asking them to get ready for the 2019 elections.

Attacking the present regime at the Centre led by Narendra Modi, she said “ dramebazi ” is the hallmark of this government and everything is done to grab power. “The slogans of ‘sab ka saath, sab ka vikas’ and ‘na khaoonga, na khaane doonga’ are only and only dramebazi (drama) and a trick to grab power,” she said.

“Under the leadership of former PM Manmohan Singh, the economy of this country flourished. Our government formed policies which lifted millions of people from poverty. And today, the Modi government is weakening these policies,” she added.

She added that the welfare measures started by the UPA government were discontinued by the present government. She maintained that the party has come forward from its position in 1998 that it should go alone. She said the UPA I and II proved that Congress can implement its vision through alliances too.

In his brief introductory remarks, party president Rahul Gandhi said the plenary will chart the future course of the party. He said he will join the old guard and the youth in the party to give a new direction to the Congress.
