Entry of foreign fishing trawlers into Indian waters will ruin fisheries sector in the country and the Modi Government should give up its plan to allow foreign vessels, according to K. Appala Raju, the general secretary of the AP Fishermen's Association.

He said in a press release here on Tuesday that the Meena Kumari committee report had recommended to the Government to allow foreign trawlers and the Congress Government had also in the past made attempts to implement the recommendation. But there was stiff resistance from traditional fishermen and other affected sections and the proposal was dropped. But the Modi Government seemed to be bent on implementing the destructive recommendation. It had issued a notification in November, 2014.

Appala Raju said the foreign vessels would indulge in indiscriminate exploitation of fisheries wealth and there would also be a lot of wastage of catch. The traditional fishermen would be badly hit. The Indian processing units would also suffer and workers would be rendered jobless. It would create havoc in the sector, he added.

To create awareness among the public about the critical issue, a seminar is being organised here on Thursday in the public library in which national level leaders of fishermen would participate. He urged the Government to give up the ill-advised move.
